Coordinated Street Outreach Project
The Coordinated Street Outreach Project brings together professionals from multiple agencies and disciplines to meet the needs of people in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area who are street homeless, intravenous drug users and/or commercial sex workers. Outreach teams, comprised of professionals in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, homeless services, and HIV/STD services, travel to locations where people in need reside or congregate (encampments, under bridges, in abandoned buildings, etc.). These professionals provide on-site case management and referral services. With support from the Regional Food Bank and Other Options food pantry, the project provides the city's only mobile food pantry. Food boxes are provided to address the nutritional needs of the individuals served, and as a means of engaging people to evaluate the need for additional services.
HIV Counseling and Testing
Be The Change has a team of staff and volunteers who are trained to provide confidential HIV counseling and testing. The focus of testing activities is on those in our community who are at high risk of HIV infection. Testing is available at the Be The Change office, but most of our HIV testing occurs at sites in the community. Trained counselors are available to provide testing at correctional facilities, drug/alcohol treatment centers, and as a part of our street outreach program. Be The Change staff is trained by the Oklahoma State Department of Health and our counselors can provide rapid HIV tests with results available in 15-20 minutes.
Advocacy
At Be The Change, we are committed to giving a voice to those in our community who are disenfranchised and vulnerable. We believe that every person has the right to be treated with dignity and respect; that all people should have equal access to services; and that all people should be involved in the decisions which affect their lives. Be The Change staff and volunteers provide support to all the people we serve: the homeless, people living with HIV/AIDS, and anyone in our community that needs support to fully exercise the rights guaranteed to all citizens of our state and nation.
